The deltoid muscle — the rounded shoulder muscle that gives the shoulder its shape — consists of three heads (anterior, lateral, and posterior) that perform different movement functions and respond to different exercises. Building complete shoulder development requires addressing all three rather than emphasizing the most commonly trained anterior head.
The Three Heads

Programming Considerations
Shoulder exercises should be distributed through the training week rather than concentrated in a single session — the deltoid’s involvement in many pushing and pulling movements means it receives significant indirect training on chest and back days. Direct shoulder work can be modest in volume when compound pressing and rowing is already present in the program.
Avoiding Overuse Issues
The rotator cuff muscles that support the shoulder joint are frequently injured in individuals who overtrain pressing relative to rowing and external rotation work. Balancing push and pull volume and including specific rotator cuff strengthening work protects shoulder health for long-term training consistency.
